ABOUT THE GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Engr. Andrew Yakubu has declared that the game of golf provides the informal forum for proffering solutions to the challenges in the oil and gas industry. The GMD represented by the Group Executive Director, Corporate Services (GED,CS) Dr. Peter S. Nmadu said this at the recently concluded 3rd Edition of the Exploration and Production Upstream Golf Tournament hosted by NAPIMS in Benin.
According to him, the game promotes friendship and builds understanding amongst partners in the Upstream Sector which is very healthy for the transformation agenda of the Government especially with the ongoing Petroleum Industry Bill.
Also speaking during the Awards Night of the tournament, the Chief host of the event, the Group Executive Director, Exploration and Production, (GED, E & P), Engr. Abiye H. Membere said the edition was a great improvement over previous editions. The improvement, he said, was evident in the turn out, organization and quality of gifts presented to winners.
Speaking on the benefits of the tournament, the GED said it has helped to foster closer relationship amongst the companies in the Upstream Sector of the Oil and Gas Industry. He said that golf as a sport has inherent in it most of the qualities of a good manager which include fitness, transparency, self-assessment to mention just a few

He reassured that as a mark of honour to one it’s own – Dr. Jackson Gaius Obaseki, whom he described as the ‘father of golf in NNPC’, the Corporation will continue to host the Golf Tournament in Benin. In his own remarks, the former GMD of NNPC, Dr. Obaseki expressed heartfelt appreciation to the Top Management of NNPC, noting that Benin had benefited immensely from the Corporation. He spoke of how golf as a sport has helped to reorganize his system and thinking process which has made him a better person.
He encouraged the Benin Club to maintain a sound leadership hoping that the tournament will soon attract international flair. Earlier, in his opening remarks, the Group General Manager, NAPIMS, Mr. Morrison Fiddi expressed his pleasure in hosting the tournament and enjoined all participants to relax and make the best out of the event. He said that being in Benin, was for him, home-coming noting that it was in the Benin Club, Golf Section that he earned his handicap in the game.
The tournament kicked off on Friday September 28, 2012 with a Pre Tournament Dinner held at the Club Hall of the Golf Section of Benin. On Saturday morning, Dr. Peter S. Nmadu representing the GMD of NNPC Teed Off the Tournament which witnessed several participants ranging from cadets, women and several male categories. Barr. Peace Anunnah emerged as the overall winner of the tournament.
