ABOUT THE COMPENDIUM
Over the last 3 years, Corporate Services (CS) Directorate has sought to:
- Change the narrative around support services from the perception as centers of cost, to actual sources of value;
- Establish order and structure to support activities at strategic and operational levels through the documentation of and adherence to best practices as encapsulated in up-to-date policies and procedures;
- Institutionalize performance accountability through governance management systems, dialogues, feedback, learning and reporting;
- Continuously push the boundaries of the ‘possible’ by way of innovation and efficiency enhancement in service delivery.
This Compendium documents and explains, at policy, activity and projects levels, the achievements of the Directorate along the dimensions listed above. Consisting of descriptive narrations, photos and evidentiary documents, the Compendium is a celebration of achievements, a reference materials source and serves as institutional memory not only for CS Directorate, but for NNPC as a whole.
The reader will find the contents most informative and useful indeed. It has been an honour for me to lead the Directorate over the Compendium reporting period, but even more so, a privilege to be blessed with such a crop of competent, dedicated and hardworking colleagues in the CS Directorate, to whom all credit goes for the achievements listed, herein.

THE FOREWORD OF THE COMPENDIUM
Written by Dr. Maikanti Baru (GMD)
On July 4, 2016, I had the rare privilege to be appointed Group Managing Director (GMD) of the Nation’s National Oil Company, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), by His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR.
I recall vividly that the first task my team and I set for ourselves was to define a focus for the Corporation. We were convinced that certain set of actions must be taken to reinvigorate NNPC and the industry. We also felt that staff morale should be revived. The 12 (twelve) Business Focus Areas (BUFAs), with the theme: ‘’Moving NNPC Forward… Together’’, launched at my maiden town hall meeting with staff encapsulate my vision for the Corporation and the industry.
Four years down the line, I am pleased to report that the level of achievements in the BUFAs are very high as championed by the different Autonomous Business Units (ABUs), Strategic Business Units (SBUs), as well as the Corporate Services Units (CSUs) of NNPC. For instance, security challenges that had hampered exploration and production activities have been tamed; new business models have been developed across NNPC businesses, leading to phenomenal boosts in productivity; cash call arrears have been resolved and some of the International Oil Companies (IOCs) have been fully settled. In addition, cash call burden on the Federation has been reduced due to the alternative funding arrangements we developed; NPDC production has grown in leaps and bounds and NNPC is now the largest gas supplier to power. The spud-in of Kolmani River-II Well was launched in February, 2019 by Mr. President and progress is being made in the rehabilitation of the refineries, etc.
As it is generally well-known, the human memory is short. This is in addition to the saying: “If it’s not written down, it didn’t happen…” It is for these and other reasons that I supported the proposal that the excellent performance of the Corporate Services (CS) Directorate in the course of the Directorate’s aligning with the Business Focus Areas, be documented in a handy Compendium entitled: ‘Milestones’. I am delighted that the Compendium has been produced and beautifully too. I have the honour to attest that the Compendium copiously documents and explains the achievements of the Directorate as contained in the aspects of the BUFAs relevant to CS Directorate. For decades to come, the publication would remain a veritable material source on the feat achieved by the CS Directorate.
To the Leadership and staff of the CS Directorate, I give my kudos for a job well done. To the general readers and inquirers, I urge you to please take advantage of the information presented in the Compendium and be richly informed.
